Second Bulusan eruption similar to previous years

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Philvolcs) on 12 June reported another phreatic eruption from Bulusan Volcano.,Philvolcs officer-in-charge (OIC) Usec Renato Solidum said the incident showed similar patterns of eruption in recent years.,“Currently, what Bulusan Volcano is showing is the same as its eruption episodes in the past year or decade… These are phreatic eruptions with low-level volcanic earthquakes,” Solidum said.,“However we are not discounting the possibility that magma may be involved in the volcano’s activity, which last occurred more than 200 years ago,” he added.,But he pointed out: “We don’t see the parameters being met yet, such as magma going up the volcano. A magmatic eruption is more dangerous. We will raise Alert Level 2 if there is magmatic activity.”,Philvolcs said the phreatic eruption occurred at 3:37 a.m. that lasted for 18 minutes.,It detected 136 volcanic earthquakes in the last 24 hours,,It likewise measured 613 tonnes of sulfur dioxide with moderate plume emissions of 150 meters tall on the west-northwest drift.,The agency’s advisory on its website also noted the ground deformation on the volcano edifice was inflated.,Ashfall was reported in the towns of Juban, Casiguran and Irosin.,Canceled flights,The eruption caused the cancellation of eight flights, according to the Manila International Airport Authority.,These flights were Cebu Pacific (5J) 325/326, Manila-Legazpi-Manila; CebGo (DG) 6111/6112, Manila-Naga-Manila; and PAL Express (2P) 2923/2924 and 2P 2919/2920, Manila-Legazpi-Manila.,The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) told reporters the evacuation of residents in some barangays of Juban has started.,“We received a report that 103 families or 438 individuals have been evacuated from Juban,” the NDRRMC said.
